Nucleation is the initial step of every first-order phase transition, and most phase transitions encountered both in everyday life and industrial processes are of the first-order. Using an elegant classical theory based on thermodynamics and kinetics, this book provides a fully detailed picture of multi-component nucleation. As many of the issues concerning multi-component nucleation theory have been solved during the last 10-15 years, it also thoroughly integrates both fundamental theory with recent advances presented in the literature.

Classical Nucleation Theory in Multicomponent Systems serves as a textbook for advanced thermodynamics courses, as well as an important reference for researchers in the field. The main topics covered are: the basic relevant thermodynamics and statistical physics; modelling a molecular cluster as a spherical liquid droplet; predicting the size and composition of the nucleating critical clusters; kinetic models for cluster growth and decay; calculating nucleation rates; and a full derivation and application of nucleation theorems that can be used to extract microscopic cluster properties from nucleation rate measurements.

The assumptions and approximations needed to build the classical theory are described in detail, and the reasons why the theory fails in certain cases are explained. Relevant problems are presented at the end of each chapter.

When managers and ecologists need to make decisions about the environment, they use models to simulate the dynamic systems that interest them. All management decisions affect certain landscapes over time, and those landscapes are composed of intricate webs of dynamic processes that need to be considered in relation to each other. With widespread use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), there is a growing need for complex models ncorporating an increasing amount of data. The open-source Spatial Modeling Environment (SME) was developed to build upon common modeling software, such as STELLA (R), and Powersim (R), among others, to create, run, analyze, and present spatial models of ecosystems, watersheds, populations, and landscapes. In this book, the creators of the Spatial Modeling Environment discuss and illustrate the uses of SME as a modeling tool for all kinds of complex spatial systems. The authors demonstrate the entire process of spatial modeling, beginning with the conceptual design, continuing through formal implementation and analysis, and finally with the interpretation and presentation of the results. TDiscrete-time signal processing has had a momentous impact on advances in engineering and science over recent decades. The rapid progress of digital and mixed-signal integrated circuits in processing speed, functionality and cost-effectiveness has led to their ubiquitous employment in signal processing and transmission in diverse milieux.

The absence of training or pilot signals from many kinds of transmission – in, for example, speech analysis, seismic exploration and texture image analysis – necessitates the widespread use of blind equalization and system identification. There have been a great many algorithms developed for these purposes, working with one- or two-dimensional (2-d) signals and with single-input single-output (SISO) or multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), real or complex systems. It is now time for a unified treatment of this subject, pointing out the common characteristics and the sometimes close relations of these algorithms as well as learning from their different perspectives. Blind Equalization and System Identification provides such a unified treatment presenting theory, performance analysis, simulation, implementation and applications.

Topics covered include:

• SISO, MIMO and 2-d non-blind equalization (deconvolution) algorithms;

• SISO, MIMO and 2-d blind equalization (deconvolution) algorithms;

• SISO, MIMO and 2-d blind system identification algorithms;

• algorithm analyses and improvements;

• applications of SISO, MIMO and 2-d blind equalization/identification algorithms.

Each chapter is completed by exercises and computer assignments designed to further understanding and to give practical experience with the algorithms discussed.

This is a textbook for graduate-level courses in discrete-time random processes, statistical signal processing, and blind equalization and system identification.
