Having fended off the 'Plum Blossom Bandit', heroic, yet melancholy swordsman Li goes into hiding for a few years while his loyal ally Fei (Derek Yee) decides to settle down. This relative peace is shattered when the dreaded 'Money Clan' set their sights on ruling the martial world and see Li as a potential obstacle. To alleviate themselves of this impediment, the clan decide to call on the services of a fearsome swordsman who is also eager to cement his reputation throughout the country. While Li battles his inner demons and his new enemies, Fei is turned every which way but loose by a ruthless seductress who is secretly at the servitude of the 'Money Clan'.

Ti Lung is Chu Liu-hsiang, a wandering martial arts expert loyal in his service of a local prince. Complicating matters is their belief that Old Hawk’s spies have already infiltrated the royal court, meaning they can trust no one, and Chu is sent on his way with a series of would-be assassins on his trail, including a mysterious and immensely talented man in black.

I saw this film last night here in Bangkok and I am pleased to relate that, despite all the alleged problems during production, Tony Jaa has delivered a very impressive film with a strong, mystical narrative; uniformly high production values; and, most importantly for a martial arts film, brilliantly conceived and choreographed action sequences. Despite its title, "Ong Bak 2" bears but a tenuous relationship to the earlier Jaa film, being an historical semi-epic set during the era of Ayutthayan imperial expansion (though, without wanting to give too much away, the closing sequence does suggest this new film can be regarded as a prequel of sorts, while also setting up the grounds for further entries to come), but it does explore similar thematic terrain as "Ong Bak" in terms of cultural identity and conflict, familial disintegration and revenge, and Buddhist spirituality. "Ong Bak 2" is a bigger film in every sense of the word, allegedly costing in excess of 300 million baht, and the money is easy to see on the screen with very impressive set design and costuming, and stunning cinematography. Jaa is terrific in the film: despite his incredible action scenes and lithe mobility, he projects a serene stillness through his character of Tien that gives the film a strong emotional anchor. As befits the type of mythic figure he is playing, he doesn't have a lot of dialogue but Jaa is essentially a physical performer, the Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire of contemporary action cinema, and he expresses himself with assured eloquence through his body and face. Indeed, in relation to the latter, while one expects corporeal proficiency and grace from Jaa, it's worth noting what extraordinary use he makes of his eyes in this film to convey a wide range of emotions. He really is a major talent and I do hope the producers at Sahamongkol realize what an asset he is to Thai cinema and start treating him with the artistic respect he deserves.

My only slight criticism is that the film doesn't quite develop its central characters and plot lines fully enough. There's a certain cool distance about the film: it looks a visual treat and is a veritable masterwork in intricately choreographed martial arts film-making but, with the exception of one or two scenes, we never quite gain a sufficient handle on the main characters or come to identify with them and their plights all that deeply. It's clear that the producers are aiming to use this film as a base for further sequels and I can't help but wonder if they strategically held back some narrative material for use in the next film. Nevertheless, this is a minor qualification and doesn't detract from what really is a terrific film all round. Given the negative press surrounding its production, I had concerns that "Ong Bak 2" might not come together but Jaa and the team have pulled off a very impressive effort, indeed, that deserves to do well not only here in Thailand but in overseas markets as well.

Once again the opening of the Shaw library is revealing many gems that have been hidden from non-Chinese audiences for too long. While solidly grounded in the wuxia tradition and very much in the style of the 1960's Shaw style this film is notable for a very unusual reason. It's one of the very few martial art films ever directed by a woman. Kuo Pao-Shu, an accomplished 32 year old actress at this point, gets behind the camera for her directorial debut.

The films opens as Feng Ying Ying is rushing home to her parents after her husband, a security officer, is murdered while protecting a shipment of treasure. With her young son in tow, they stop for a rest but cross paths with a quartet of rogues. The lead rogue decides to rape Ying Ying while the others beat the son for sport. Ying Ying has a sword but is outmatched. She struggles with the rogue but that angers him and he ends up killing her. The boy escapes and rushes to the Feng mansion. The Feng elders are not there but his aunt, Fei Fei is. Outraged at the double tragedy, she immediately sets out to find her sister's killers with the young boy. Although she is an excellent martial artist, she disguises herself as a man. They find them but she is dismayed to discover that the lead rogue is her fiancé, the son of her father's best friend!

THe film is very accomplished and well paced for a first time effort. Kuo manages to keep the action taut and extensive while giving the film a woman's viewpoint at the same time. It makes what could have been a standard revenge film into something with more depth. Kuo went on to direct a few more films including the classic "The Master Strikes".

The fights scenes are firmly planted in the style of the era. While energetic and well- choreographed, there's a lot of trampoline work and reverse-filmed jumping onto walls and building roofs. It's fun.

The film is based on Chin Yung's novel The Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils and depicts a violent confrontation of super-powered martial artists in the boxer world that begins with an illicit affair. Tuan Yu (Danny Lee) is a wealthy young scholar with no interest in martial arts, who sets out into the boxer world to discover if he can survive on his own. He encounters Zhong Ling-erh (Lam Jan-kei), a beautiful woman in command of deadly snakes capable of burrowing through a victim's body. She ends up trapped by members of the Poisonous Moths Clan, but not before allowing Yu to escape and seek aid from the notorious female warrior Xiang Yaocha (Tim Lei), wielder of the deadly Bone-cutting sword. Yu doesn't know it yet, but the woman is actually Mu Wanqing, his elder sister, born of his father and the scorned wife of the notorious Yellow Robe Man (Shut Chung-tin). When this affair was previously uncovered, the two men fought and Yu's father blasted the Yellow Robe Man's legs off with his Yi Yang Finger technique. Now, the Yellow Robe Man plots to take his revenge by abducting Yu and his sister with the help of a vicious man-beast (Kong Do) with a metallic skull and claw hand. Their only hope resides with Yu, who has absorbed incredible internal power by sucking the blood of the giant Red Python. Combined with another power source, he will have to confront a nasty gorilla, while locked in a prison lair and escape to face the Yellow Robe Man's fire breath and extending mechanical bird's feet.

While Kim doesn't have any real interest in Zamir, she continually toys with him by manipulating him to fight the tae kwon do students at her father's dojo. Suddenly, a villainous scoundrel named Max Kalba bursts onto the scene -- hell-bent on a mission to seek vengeance against Kim's father and his students. It seems that Max's late wife was not the faithful kind, and now the enraged widower places the blame for his wife's infidelity square on the shoulders of Kim's father. With nothing left to lose and everything to fight for, Zamir will take on Max in a fight to the finish to protect the people he cares for, and win Kim's heart once and for all.

Set during the Edo period under the Tokugawa shogunate, Nemuri Kyôshirô is a mysterious samurai with sleepy eyes whose mother is a noble’s daughter and whose father is a fallen Western priest. His trademark fighting technique is the Engetsu-Sappo, literally meaning "The Full Moon Cut." It is a technique in which he draws a circle with his sword -- his opponent is always slain by the time the circle is completed.

Nemuri Kyôshirô 1: Sappocho is the first of the series , it is also called Sleepy Eyes of Death #1. In it, the ronin Nemuri Kyôshirô is embroiled in a plot to grab a jade statue that contains damning evidence of a clan's smuggling activities. His character, brimful of cynicism and ennui, is a perfect example of the world-weariness displayed by both noir antiheroes and ronin, jaded men who have seen too much death and the worst side of human nature.

Absent the visual razzle-dazzle of CGI and wirework, becoming de rigueur for such fare, measured approach by vet Nipponese genre journeyman Shunichi Nagasaki leaves pic with an honorable fight ahead of it following fest action.The actors in these leading roles are all actual holders of karate Black Belt rank, and siplay this true masculine strength in a way that mere acting could not achieve. In the main cast, the role of Giryu, is played by AKIHITO YAGI (Fifth Dan), instructor in International Meibukan Goju Ryu Karate. The role of Taikan is played by TATSUYA NAKA (Sixth Dan), instructor at the Japan Karate Association General Headquarters (Corp.)

Critics have been calling it the thinking person’s martial arts movie. BLACK BELT (KURO-OBI), a period karate film from director Shunichi Nagasaki, held its world premiere at the Montreal World Film Festival back in August prior to its October release in Japan. It has since picked up highly favorable buzz from early viewers and the American karate community, notably for what is being hailed as one of the most authentic and powerful depictions of karate ever put to feature film.
Set in the early years of the Showa Era in Japan, the story revolves around three men who aspire to receive the “kuro-obi” that can go only to the rightful successor.
The year is 1932. Three men are zealously engaged in karate training at the dojo of Eiken Shibahara. Their names are Taikan (Tatsuya Naka), Choei (Yuji Suzuki) and Giryu (Akihito Yagi). Eiken suddenly dies, but the “kuro-obi” black belt that will designate his successor has not yet been passed on.
“Karate is not about fighting.” Who will be the one to heed Eiken’s words of wisdom and receive the coveted “kuro-obi” to carry on as his successor?
In a related development, the Military Police Headquarters takes note of the exceptional skill of these martial art practitioners and the three men are commanded to join their forces. Then, the three that have left the dojo are thrust into a terrible and fateful encounter.
In opposition to modern martial arts film trends where wires, CGI or stylized filmmaking techniques are employed to dazzle audiences with frivolous action, Nagasaki has combined a character-driven story from screenwriter George Iida with the talents of real black belt karate masters Akihito Yagi, Tatsuya Naka and Yuji Suzuki. Yet it was more than just the fighting skills of these non-actors that attracted the director, particularly in regard to Yagi who is the son of famed Goju-ryu master Meitoku Yagi.

ИМХО конечно, но фильм смотреть на языке оригинала (с сабами) абсолютно ненапряжно, зато все эмоции артистов передаются досконально.

Alexander Fu Sheng, Chen Kuan Tai, Chi Kuan Chun.

Early Chang Cheh and also one of his bests. The action is bit slow compared to later films but is very well handled. Excellent performance from the magnificent trio Fu Sheng, Chen Kuan Tai and Chi Kuan-Chun. All 3 are so good looking and charismatic it's a always a pleasure to watch them fight.

Chang Cheh uses red or monochrome camera filtering to emphasis on the tragic moments, mostly the death of a hero. He uses the same technique again in his later films.

Worth mentioning is Fu Sheng's death which is particularly nasty. Which reminds me of another (possibly) Chang Cheh film in which Ti Lung is cut in half!! Cheh sure knows how to deal out terrible deaths to his heroes.
