Computer Viruses: from theory to applications

9782287239397ts2.jpg

Éric Filiol
Paperback: 400 pages
Publisher: Springer; 1 edition (September 14, 2005)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 2287239391
ISBN-13: 978-2287239397
Format: pdf

Book Description
This book deals with computer viruses envisaged from three different points of view, namely the theoretical fundamentals of computer virology, algorithmic and practical aspects of viruses and their potential applications to various areas. The theoretical formalization by means of Turing machines, self-reproducing automata and recursive functions enable a precise and exhaustive description of the different types of malware. It follows that the main stakes of computer defense and antiviral fighting are easily highlighted. Detailed analysis of the source code for representative members of each virus/worm family allows the reader to grasp the basic algorithmic aspects involved in self-reproducing codes. The C programming language has been systematically used for a better understanding of the considered codes.

Book Description
Communication is fast becoming a general requirement for embedded systems in our increasingly connected world. In fact, it's difficult to find embedded systems that include no form of external communication. Embedded systems are now transmitting electric meter readings over low-bandwidth wireless links to alleviate the need to read them visually. Global Positioning System (GPS) technology and wireless links with embedded systems are also used to pinpoint the exact location, speed, oil pressure, and other parameters of fleets of trucks anywhere in the country. Creation of these and other networked applications are the focus of this book. Using practical tutorials on TCP/IP application layer protocols such as HTTP, SMTP, POP3, SNMP, and SLP, developers learn how to develop and deploy these protocols in their embedded systems.

Using practical tutorials on TCP/IP application layer protocols such as HTTP, SMTP, POP3, SNMP, and SLP, this text explains how to develop and deploy application layer protocols for adding connectivity to embedded devices.

H. Jonathan Chao, Bin Liu
Hardcover: 640 pages
Publisher: Wiley-IEEE Press (April 6, 2007)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0470053674
ISBN-13: 978-0470053676
Format: pdf

Book Description
Learn to Design High Performance Switches and Routers for Today's Ever Growing Internet Traffic

As Internet traffic continues to grow, and demands for quality of service become more stringent, researchers and engineers can turn to High Performance Switches and Routers for tested and proven solutions. This text presents the latest developments in high performance switches and routers, coupled with step-by-step design guidance.

More than 550 figures and examples enable readers to grasp all the theories and algorithms used for design and implementation.

The authors begin with an examination of the architecture of the Internet, as it is now and as it will be in the future. Then, they examine router architectures and their building blocks, and the challenging issues involved in designing high performance, high-speed routers. Examples of commercial high-end routers are provided.

Next, the authors discuss the main functions of the line cards of a core router, including route lookup, packet classification, and traffic management for quality of service control. The bulk of the text is then dedicated to packet switching designs. Coverage includes the various available architectures, algorithms, and technologies. Among the topics covered, readers will find detailed discussions of the latest innovations in electrical and optical packet switching. The final chapter discusses state-of-the-science commercial chipsets used to build routers. Readers learn their architecture and functions, using the theories and conceptual designs presented in the previous chapters as a foundation.

Although implementation techniques for switches and routers will continue to evolve, the fundamental theories and principles of this text will serve readers for years to come. In addition to bringing researchers and engineers up to date with the latest designs, this text, with its focus on illustrations and examples, is an ideal graduate-level textbook.

Essential SNMP, Second Edition [ILLUSTRATED]

От издателя
Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) provides a "simple" set of operations that allows you to more easily monitor and manage network devices like routers, switches, servers, printers, and more. The information you can monitor with SNMP is wide-ranging--from standard items, like the amount of traffic flowing into an interface, to far more esoteric items, like the air temperature inside a router. In spite of its name, though, SNMP is not especially simple to learn.

O'Reilly has answered the call for help with a practical introduction that shows how to install, configure, and manage SNMP. Written for network and system administrators, the book introduces the basics of SNMP and then offers a technical background on how to use it effectively. Essential SNMP explores both commercial and open source packages, and elements like OIDs, MIBs, community strings, and traps are covered in depth. The book contains five new chapters and various updates throughout. Other new topics include:

# Expanded coverage of SNMPv1, SNMPv2, and SNMPv3
# Expanded coverage of SNMPc
# The concepts behind network management and change management
# RRDTool and Cricket
# The use of scripts for a variety of tasks
# How Java can be used to create SNMP applications
# Net-SNMP's Perl module

The bulk of the book is devoted to discussing, with real examples, how to use SNMP for system and network administration tasks. Administrators will come away with ideas for writing scripts to help them manage their networks, create managed objects, and extend the operation of SNMP agents.

Overview

Hacking is the art of creative problem solving, whether that means finding an unconventional solution to a difficult problem or exploiting holes in sloppy programming. Many people call themselves hackers, but few have the strong technical foundation needed to really push the envelope.
Rather than merely showing how to run existing exploits, author Jon Erickson explains how arcane hacking techniques actually work. To share the art and science of hacking in a way that is accessible to everyone, Hacking: The Art of Exploitation, 2nd Edition introduces the fundamentals of C programming from a hacker's perspective.
The included LiveCD provides a complete Linux programming and debugging environment-all without modifying your current operating system. Use it to follow along with the book's examples as you fill gaps in your knowledge and explore hacking techniques on your own. Get your hands dirty debugging code, overflowing buffers, hijacking network communications, bypassing protections, exploiting cryptographic weaknesses, and perhaps even inventing new exploits. This book will teach you how to:
Program computers using C, assembly language, and shell scripts
Corrupt system memory to run arbitrary code using buffer overflows and format strings
Inspect processor registers and system memory with a debugger to gain a real understanding of what is happening
Outsmart common security measures like nonexecutable stacks and intrusion detection systems
Gain access to a remote server using port-binding or connect-back shellcode, and alter a server's logging behavior to hide your presence
Redirect network traffic, conceal open ports, and hijack TCP connections
Crack encrypted wireless traffic using the FMS attack, and speed up brute-force attacks using a password probability matrix
Hackers are always pushing the boundaries, investigating the unknown, and evolving their art. Even if you don't already know how to program, Hacking: The Art of Exploitation, 2nd Edition will give you a complete picture of programming, machine architecture, network communications, and existing hacking techniques. Combine this knowledge with the included Linux environment, and all you need is your own creativity.

The IDA Pro Book: The Unofficial Guide to the World's Most Popular Disassembler by Chris Eagle

2qvwk6a.png

No source code? No problem. With IDA Pro, you live in a source codeoptional
world. IDA can automatically analyze the millions of opcodes that make up an
executable and present you with a disassembly. But at that point, your work is
just beginning. With The IDA Pro Book, you'll learn how to turn that mountain of
mnemonics into something you can actually use.

Hailed by the creator of IDA Pro as the "long-awaited" and "information-packed"
guide to IDA, The IDA Pro Book covers everything from the very first steps to
advanced automation techniques. While other disassemblers slow your analysis
with inflexibility, IDA invites you to customize its output for improved readability
and usefulness. You'll save time and effort as you learn to:

* Identify known library routines, so you can focus your analysis on other
areas of the code
* Extend IDA to support new processors and filetypes, making disassembly
possible for new or obscure architectures
* Explore popular plug-ins that make writing IDA scripts easier, allow
collaborative reverse engineering, and much more
* Utilize IDA's built-in debugger to tackle obfuscated code that would defeat
a stand-alone disassembler

You'll still need serious assembly skills to tackle the toughest executables, but
IDA makes things a lot easier. Whether you're analyzing the software on a black
box or conducting hard-core vulnerability research, a mastery of IDA Pro is crucial
to your success. Take your skills to the next level with The IDA Pro Book.
